Special Education Resources
Did you know that the Westchester PTA has a Special Education Liaison?
A Special Education Liaison (SEL) is a parent volunteer who has a child with an IEP.
The liaison works closely with the PTA and school staff to be a resource in the school community regarding the needs of children with disabilities. This valuable position models the importance of advocacy and the positive impact it has to the school and community.
What does a PTA SEL do?
Promotes parent participation in IEP team meetings. This may be done through newsletter articles, information sheets, special meetings, or personal contact.
Distributes information to your school community through your local PTA newsletter.
Refers parents to the Resource Center for support and information.
Does the WES PTA have a SEL?
We have two! Meet Diane Perez and Amanda Rivers.
Diane Perez is a WES parent of a Special Education student; her youngest child has an IEP and has received services since age 2. She has 16 years of experience as a Special Education teacher, including working in a self-contained program and in an inclusive, high-needs classroom supporting students with autism and communication needs.
Amanda Rivers is a WES parent and her oldest and middle daughters have a 504. She has been a Special Education teacher for 16 years in both public and private schools. She is currently a parent educator with the Infants and Toddlers program for Montgomery County Public Schools.
How can I keep up with SEL content and information?
Amanda and Diane will issue a monthly newsletter to share helpful resources, community events, upcoming dates and practical tips to support families of students with IEPs. There’s also a closed Facebook group you can request to join, and you can send an email to the WES SEL address: westchesterSEL@gmail.com. We’re here for you!
